I joined the School in 1996 having lectured previously at University College London. I am a cultural-historical geographer and my research has been concerned with the relationships between space, identity and representation. I have been particularly interested in national identity and the social memory of war. These issues have been addressed with reference to public monuments and memorials, literary texts and the construction of heritage spaces. I am currently working on a British Academy funded project concerned with the role of botanical gardens in Britain and Ireland in the context of imperial geographies.
I am Book Review Editor of the journal Social and Cultural Geography and serve on a number of other editorial boards. I teach at all levels in the undergraduate curriculum including the following courses: GGY105 Human Geography: Society and Space, GGY228 Contemporary Approaches to Geographical Inquiry (co-ordinator), GGY229 Representations of Landscape, Space and Culture, and GGY326 The Geography of War and Public Memory (co-ordinator). I have been Adviser of Studies for Geography, and the School's Research Seminar Co-ordinator until 2003Recent Publications
